Abstract

The diversity in data types and formats produced by neuroscience research presents a significant challenge to open science initiatives. As a solution, the digital research infrastructure, EBRAINS, offers a suite of integrative services to share, discover, and process neuroscience data with state-of-the-art computing systems. EBRAINS promotes open science together with responsible research and innovation practices to ensure a holistic understanding of neuroscience. At its core, the EBRAINS Data & Knowledge Service offers a centralized data management system with standardized metadata and a dedicated curation framework, all built upon the FAIR principles and in compliance with EU data protection and GDPR laws. The Data & Knowledge Service empowers researchers to seamlessly connect and integrate neuroscience data into other EBRAINS services of specialized tools, computational models, and workflows. Here, we present the dedicated curation framework for sharing multifaceted neuroscience data via the EBRAINS Knowledge Graph. This data-sharing process is supported by data curation scientists, with diverse neuroscience backgrounds, providing tailored support to researchers to efficiently organize and annotate data in compliance with the openMINDS metadata framework. Through showcasing the curation framework and related workflows, we demonstrate how neuroscience data can be shared and ready for seamless integration and processing by other EBRAINS services. Data sharing through EBRAINS advances data findability, integration, and interoperability, encompassing increased exposure, new funding opportunities, and the fostering of collective progress toward understanding the brain in health and disease.Funded from the European Union’s Research and Innovation Program Horizon Grant Agreement No. 101147319 (EBRAINS 2.0)
