Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the appearance of motor and non-motor symptoms, resulting from the depletion of dopamine due to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Unfortunately, there is currently no definitive test to confirm the diagnosis and no curative treatment for this disease. Our Epidemiological Study of the disease in Mauritania revealed several important findings. Age is a key factor in the incidence of the disease, with a significant increase in cases in individuals aged between 50 and 70. Parkinson's disease is also male-dominated, affecting 62% of men. The characteristics of the disease vary between the sexes, with notable differences in terms of age of onset and distribution between early and late onset. These observations suggest the need for gender-specific management. In addition, ethnicity plays a role in the distribution of cases, with a marked prevalence among Moors. The differences observed between ethnic groups suggest the existence of genetic, environmental and cultural factors specific to each group. In the light of these results, it is clear that Parkinson's disease in Mauritania requires a multidisciplinary and personalized approach. It is imperative that we redouble our efforts to better understand the demographics and factors that influence the development of Parkinson's disease in Mauritania.
