Evolution of convulsive therapy from electroconvulsive therapy to Magnetic Seizure Therapy; Interventional Neuropsychiatry
In April, we will host Nolan Williams and Mustafa Husain. Be prepared to embark on a journey from early brain stimulation with ECT to state-of-the art TMS protocols and magnetic seizure therapy! The talks will be held on Thursday, April 25th at noon ET / 6PM CET. Nolan Williams, MD, is an associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stanford University. He developed the SAINT protocol, which is the first FDA-cleared non-invasive, rapid-acting neuromodulation treatment for treatment-resistant depression. Mustafa Husain, MD, is an adjunct professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University and a professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. Use of Artificial Intelligence by Law Enforcement Authorities in the EU
Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a global priority. Rapid and ongoing technological advancements in AI have prompted European legislative initiatives to regulate its use. In April 2021, the European Commission submitted a proposal for a Regulation that would harmonize artificial intelligence rules across the EU, including the law enforcement sector. Consequently, law enforcement officials await the outcome of the ongoing inter-institutional negotiations (trilogue) with great anticipation, as it will define how to capitalize on the opportunities presented by AI and how to prevent criminals from abusing this emergent technology.

On Thursday, April 27th, we will host Hayriye Cagnan and Philip A. Starr. Hayriye Cagnan, PhD, is an associate professor at the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit and University of Oxford. She will tell us about “Therapies orchestrated by patients’ own rhythms”. Philip A. Starr, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon and professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of California San Francisco. Besides his scientific presentation on “My evolution in invasive human neurophysiology: from basal ganglia single units to chronic electrocorticography”, he will give us a glimpse at the person behind the science. Hughlings Jackson Lecture: Making Progress in Progressive MS – the Ultimate Challenge!
On April 22, 2021, Dr. Alan J Thompson of the University College London and the UCL Institute of Neurology, London, UK will deliver the Hughlings Jackson Lecture entitled, “Making Progress in Progressive MS – the Ultimate Challenge!” Established in 1935, the Hughlings Jackson Lecture is The Neuro’s premier scientific lecture. It honors the legacy of British neurologist John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) who pioneered the development of neurology as a medical specialty. Talk Abstract : The international focus on progressive MS, driven by the Progressive MS Alliance amongst others, together with recent encouraging results from clinical trials have raised the profile and emphasised the importance of understanding, treating and ultimately preventing progression in MS. Effective treatment for Progressive MS is now regarded as the single most important issue facing the MS community. There are several important challenges to developing new treatments for progressive MS. Fundamental to any development in treatment is a better understanding of the mechanisms of tissue injury underpinning progression which will in turn allow the identification of new targets against which treatments can be directed. There are additional complications in determining when progression actually starts, determining the impact of aging and defining the progressive clinical phenotypes – an area which has become increasingly complex in recent months. Evaluating potential new treatments in progressive MS also poses particular challenges including trial design and the selection of appropriate clinical and imaging outcomes - in particular, identifying an imaging biomarker for phase II trials of progressive MS. Despite these challenges, considerable progress is being made in developing new treatments targeting the innate immune system and exploring neuroprotective strategies. Further advances are being driven by a number of international networks, funded by the Progressive MS Alliance. Overall we are seeing encouraging progress as a result of co-ordinated global collaboration which offers real possibilities for truly effective treatment of progression.
British Neuroscience Association (BNA) Festival - 2021
In April 2021, in partnership with the UK Dementia Research Institute, the British Neuroscience Association will host its fifth Festival of Neuroscience. Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID19, our 2021 event will be the first ever online Festival of Neuroscience. Although we are sorry to miss meeting in person, we're excited to create a whole new Festival experience! The ambition and scope of the BNA Festivals make them unparalleled across neuroscience. Being online will not change how the BNA2021 event will: - bring together multiple organisations with an interest in brain research at a single, shared event, creating a novel, multi-organisation forum featuring all areas of fundamental research in neuroscience and psychology, from both academia and the commercial sector, plus clinical expertise in neurology and psychiatry. - include a programme of public events as well. Past Festivals have seen a rap performance about consciousness, lunchtime talks, sessions in schools, and much more.
