NMC4 Short Talk: What can 140,000 Reaches Tell Us About Demographic Contributions to Visuomotor Adaptation?
Motor learning is typically assessed in the lab, affording a high degree of control over the task environment. However, this level of control often comes at the cost of smaller sample sizes and a homogenous pool of participants (e.g. college students). To address this, we have designed a web-based motor learning experiment, making it possible to reach a larger, more diverse set of participants. As a proof-of-concept, we collected 1,581 participants completing a visuomotor rotation task, where participants controlled a visual cursor on the screen with their mouse and trackpad. Motor learning was indexed by how fast participants were able to compensate for a 45° rotation imposed between the cursor and their actual movement. Using a cross-validated LASSO regression, we found that motor learning varied significantly with the participant’s age and sex, and also strongly correlated with the location of the target, visual acuity, and satisfaction with the experiment. In contrast, participants' mouse and browser type were features eliminated by the model, indicating that motor performance was not influenced by variations in computer hardware and software. Together, this proof-of-concept study demonstrates how large datasets can generate important insights into the factors underlying motor learning.
Swimming and crawling of Euglena gracilis: a tale with many twists
Euglena gracilis is an interesting unicellular protist, also because it can adopt different motility strategies: swimming by flagellar propulsion, or crawling thanks to large amplitude shape changes of the whole body (a behavior known as “metaboly”, or “amoeboid motion”). Swimming trajectories are helical. The are powered by the beating of a single emerging flagellum, which spans non-planar waveforms in the shape of a twisted lasso. Finally the harmoniously coordinated shape changes that make metaboly possible, reminiscent of peristaltic waves, arise form the relative sliding of its pellicle strips, resulting in twisted helical bundles. We will report on the most recent findings on these interconnected topics, for which helical shapes provide a striking fil rouge.
Bridging brain and cognition: A multilayer network analysis of brain structural covariance and general intelligence in a developmental sample of struggling learners
Network analytic methods that are ubiquitous in other areas, such as systems neuroscience, have recently been used to test network theories in psychology, including intelligence research. The network or mutualism theory of intelligence proposes that the statistical associations among cognitive abilities (e.g. specific abilities such as vocabulary or memory) stem from causal relations among them throughout development. In this study, we used network models (specifically LASSO) of cognitive abilities and brain structural covariance (grey and white matter) to simultaneously model brain-behavior relationships essential for general intelligence in a large (behavioral, N=805; cortical volume, N=246; fractional anisotropy, N=165), developmental (ages 5-18) cohort of struggling learners (CALM). We found that mostly positive, small partial correlations pervade both our cognitive and neural networks. Moreover, calculating node centrality (absolute strength and bridge strength) and using two separate community detection algorithms (Walktrap and Clique Percolation), we found convergent evidence that subsets of both cognitive and neural nodes play an intermediary role between brain and behavior. We discuss implications and possible avenues for future studies.
