Topography of rod and cone photoreceptors in the retina of the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

Alina Scheer, Ursula Reichart, Stephan Handschuh, Stefan Kummer, Peter K. Ahnelt, Martin Glösmann · FENS Forum 2024

Mammals have a duplex retina, with rods for dim-light vision and cones for daylight and color vision. In most mammals rods predominate. Cone dominant retinas are exceptional and have been reported, e.g., for species in the rodent suborder Sciuromorpha. The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a representative of Sciuromorpha with excellent daylight vision. This study aimed to provide detailed information on the photoreceptors of this species for the first time. Eyes from S. vulgaris of different age and both genders were examined. Rods and spectral cone types were immunolabeled with cel
