Astrocytes have a pivotal role in overseeing extracellular ion concentrations and synaptic neurotransmitters, profoundly influencing neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission, and behavior. Their intricate interactions with the vascular system and diverse calcium signaling mechanisms further amplify their impact on brain functions.
