Online contrastive PCA with Hebbian / anti-Hebbian plasticity

Tiberiu Tesileanu, Siavash Golkar, David Lipshutz, Dmitri Chklovskii · COSYNE 2023

Living organisms receive an immense amount of information per unit time, but much of it is of little relevance for behavior. A simple approach to process this high-dimensional input is to focus on a lower-dimensional subspace and ignore the directions that are less informative. Principal component analysis (PCA) achieves this by discarding the directions with low variance. Such an approach is, however, inefficient in cases where the irrelevant directions are very noisy, thus having greater variance than the relevant ones. If we have access to representative samples of variability in irrelevant

The order and timing of II/III layer activation determine the magnitude and direction of the plastic changes in layer V of the primary motor cortex

Pablo Azón, Samuel Alberquilla, Sara Expósito, Alejandro Hernández Seco, Lucía García Carracedo, Eduardo D. Martín · FENS Forum 2024

The primary motor cortex (MO-p) is a region with a very complex and varied circuitry. It receives inputs from thalamus and other cortical regions, and its outputs goes to cortex, subcortical regions, and medulla, controlling numerous aspects of the motor behavior, as the coordination or the motor learning. The disruption of this system can lead to develop some motor diseases. It is known that glutamatergic neurons of layer II/III project to pyramidal neurons of layer V, putting the inputs and the outputs which goes to medulla and lower brainstem together. However, the plasticity of these conne
