The cellular processes underlying the formation of memory share many similarities with the immune system, as both are intricate networks that affect, and are affected, by the body via multiple ‘modes’ of operation. Indeed, the two systems are functionally integrated, with the brain’s immune system helping to regulate synaptic plasticity and memory. At the molecular level, memory and the immune system are functionally integrated by non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which have recently emerged as key regulators of cellular activity throughout the phases of memory and in the adaptive immune system.
