Abstract

Ionizing radiation (IR) triggers oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, leading to permanent cognitive decline during brain tumor treatments. This study aims to investigate the radioprotective potential of pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) extract against IR-induced damage. Forty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: Control, Punica granatum (PG), Radiation (RT), and RT+PG. Rats in the RT+PG group received 50 mg/kg PG extract via oral gavage for 14 days. Behavioral and cognitive functions were assessed using Open-field, Novel Object Recognition (NOR), Y-Maze, and Social Interaction (SI) tests. Data were analyzed using Tukey’s multiple comparisons test. Results indicated that IR significantly decreased the discrimination index in NOR, alternation percentage in Y-Maze, and locomotor activity compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conversely, the RT+PG group exhibited significant improvements in recognition memory (p < 0.0001), spatial memory (p = 0.0352), and locomotor activity (p = 0.0053) compared to the RT group. Furthermore, PG treatment reduced anxiety-like behaviors by increasing time spent in the center of the open field (p = 0.0373). In conclusion, Punica granatum peel extract demonstrates a robust neuroprotective effect by preserving memory and motor functions against radiation-induced toxicity.
