Abstract
Mind-wandering is a cognitive phenomenon leading to the diversion of attention from an ongoing task towards internal thoughts or feelings. While cognitive, affective, and temporal aspects of mind-wandering are well-researched, its embodied and interoceptive characteristics remain unexplored. We aimed to probe the subjective, neurological, and physiological underpinnings of embodied mind-wandering, specifically in response to a naturalistic anxiety-inducing film.We expanded upon traditional experience sampling methods to capture embodied mind-wandering, integrating interoceptive content, alongside a novel Film-Experience-Scale. In ~300 participants, we analysed fMRI during an anxiety-inducing film with concurrent cardiac, respiratory, and skin-conductance recordings. Furthermore, we investigated individual differences in interoceptive performance and psychopathology with embodied mind-wandering.Results reveal distinct characteristics of mind-wandering during film viewing compared to resting state, with cognitive and somatic elements organised into higher-level facets. Subjective analyses confirm the film's efficacy in eliciting anxiogenic emotions and demonstrated specific correlations with embodied mind-wandering constructs. Physiologically, embodied-anxiogenic mind-wandering was reflected in more irregular breathing patterns. Despite this, no significant associations are found between cardiac metrics and post-film mind-wandering facets. Finally, we explored static-functional connectivity patterns. This study establishes the embodied nature of mind-wandering after an anxiogenic film, highlighting its correlation with breath metrics and film experience. We will conduct further analyses incorporating skin conductance responses to assess induced anxiety during film viewing. Additionally, analysing dynamic-functional connectivity corresponding to varying film experiences can provide insights into the temporal dynamics of embodied mind-wandering facets.
