To further characterise the downstream effects of CA2 inhibition, CA2 pyramidal neurons were acute and chronically inhibited using viral-mediated expression of Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADD). Whole brain functional ultrasound imaging on mice performed during early adulthood revealed that CA2 inhibition has consequences on the global network activity. Specifically, neuronal activity in the frontal network and also the thalamus was particularly vulnerable to perturbations in the neuronal activity of dorsal CA2 pyramidal neurons, highlighting a critical role for CA2 in coordinating distributed brain networks relevant to cognition.
