Develop research expertise and independence within an agreed host-led project aligned with Nelson Mandela University research themes. This call covers Council Postdoctoral, Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral and Research Fellowships. Covers: Annual awards: ZAR 270,000 Council postdoctoral, ZAR 320,000 Vice-Chancellor’s postdoctoral, or ZAR 400,000 research fellowship. Postdoctoral support lasts up to two years; research support up to three. Research fellowship remuneration is taxable; research running costs require host support.
Host location: South Africa
Residence at Nelson Mandela University is required. International research fellows need qualification equivalence and eligibility for the relevant South African work permit. Full-time outside employment is excluded.
Nationality or residence: International applicants are eligible subject to immigration requirements; South African citizens and permanent residents are prioritised in cohort targets.

Postdoctoral applicants need a PhD from the past five years, or a documented thesis submission planned by December 2026; the degree must be completed before starting. Research fellows need a PhD over five but at most ten years old and two years of post-PhD research. Prior NRF A/B/C ratings, continuing 2027 awards and third postdoctoral funding cycles are excluded.
