Teaching and administrative relief allows established independent researchers to concentrate on research for one term to one academic year, beginning from 1 October 2027. The scheme supports natural sciences, including biomedical research, mathematics, physics and engineering, excluding clinical and interventional human studies, social sciences and humanities. Apply through Flexi-Grant with institutional support by 15:00 UK time on 4 November 2026.

Apply with a supervisor or host
Covers: Funds a replacement teacher’s salary up to the host’s minimum lectureship scale, plus up to GBP 5,000 in research expenses, for one term to one academic year. The GBP 5,000 is an expenses allowance, not the total fellowship value.

An eligible UK host is required. Applicants must already hold a permanent post at their UK host.

Applicants need a PhD or equivalent, a permanent post at a UK university or eligible nonprofit research institution, and a well-established independent research programme. They must not have received a total of one year or more of sabbatical or other teaching/administration relief in the three years before application. Other recent funding must not duplicate the requested relief. The fellowship is held at the applicant’s own UK institution.
