Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences
About
The Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot has opened a competition for one assistant professor (adiunkt) in the Environmental DNA Laboratory of its Department of Paleoceanography. The role centres on analysing metagenomic and metabarcoding data from high-throughput sequencing, adapting algorithms and statistical methods to metabarcoding data for specific taxonomic groups such as foraminifera, building and curating barcoding and metabarcoding reference databases, maintaining the laboratory's bioinformatics tools, training team members in bioinformatics for environmental genomics and paleogenomics, and publishing and presenting results at international conferences.
Salary is PLN 8,800 gross per month (total employer cost), with a planned start in November/December 2026. Applications (CV, master's and PhD diplomas, motivation letter, list of publications, projects, conferences and awards, contact details and a signed data-processing consent) are sent electronically to the institute's competitions address; the call was announced on 29 October 2026.
Requirements
PhD in oceanography specialising in marine biology, molecular ecology or microbiology; documented experience generating and analysing high-throughput sequencing data (metabarcoding and/or metagenomics) with publications; molecular techniques (DNA isolation, PCR, high-throughput sequencing); very good knowledge of statistical tools for microbial ecology and paleoceanography, especially biomonitoring and paleogenomics; bioinformatics and biostatistics in R, Python or MATLAB; very good written and spoken English; oceanography/paleoceanography publications and conference presentations.
