Doctoral researcher position
Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student), 3 positions, Development of Data Science and AI for Spatial Data
University of Eastern Finland
About
The School of Computing at the University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio campus) recruits three doctoral researchers in data science and AI for spatial data for MINE-THE-GAP, a project funded by the European Research Council that combines satellite imagery, mining data reports and AI to map mining activities and their impacts worldwide and provide information for more transparent and sustainable mining. Each doctoral researcher leads a thesis on mapping a different aspect of mining, with hands-on training in processing large Earth-observation and spatial datasets and in scalable AI methods, and opportunities for international collaboration and research visits through a partner network that includes the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the GFZ Helmholtz Centre.
The fixed-term three-year positions start on 1 February 2027 or as agreed, with salary on the Finnish universities' scale (demand levels 2–4 plus a personal component). Applications are due by 17 November 2026.
Requirements
Eligibility for doctoral studies with a Master's degree in a quantitative field such as data science, computer science, engineering, geoinformatics or statistics; students in the final stages of their Master's may apply if they deliver the degree certificate by 15 December 2026.
