About

Three-year PhD contract in the AI department of the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT), which has a long tradition in knowledge representation and reasoning. Building plans to reach goals, and more generally deciding and learning how to act, are fundamental problems for intelligent agents. Classical AI planning generates plans for a single agent, assuming no other agent intervenes and that the planner has perfect knowledge of the environment and of action pre- and post-conditions.

More expressive planning must also reason about other agents’ beliefs, goals, intentions and actions (theory of mind), learn from past experience, monitor the outcomes of actions, and learn from and manage unexpected results. The doctoral researcher will work on the conceptual and formal foundations of a dynamic-logic formalism for conformant and multi-agent epistemic planning, and will present results at national and international conferences and in department seminars.

Applicants submit a short research proposal (one page maximum) related to these themes. Start date 1 December 2026; minimum monthly salary €2,300.

Requirements

Background in knowledge representation and/or machine learning, with interest in integrating them in the context of planning; a one-page research proposal is part of the application.
