About
Twelve-month postdoctoral position in the SARA team (Services and Architectures for Advanced Networks) at LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse, within the ANR JCJC project LAPSUS, supervised by Nicola Accettura and Balakrishna Prabhu. Satellite navigation (GNSS) is the standard way to locate people, animals and objects, but listening for GNSS signals quickly drains batteries, which limits applications such as reliably monitoring people with Alzheimer’s disease or pets; GNSS can also suffer interruptions or outages, for example during heightened solar activity.
LoRaWAN networks enable very low-energy geolocation at the cost of coarse positioning. The postdoc will study the ability of a multi-gateway LoRaWAN network to track systems of moving objects without GNSS, defining algorithms that predict the behaviour of moving objects while trading position accuracy against the number of tracked objects and exploiting all data that can aid navigation, including accelerometers and range-free localisation techniques.
The work involves modelling the scenario with theoretical tools, developing a realistic simulation environment and testing the resulting ideas. Start date 4 January 2027; gross monthly salary €3,041–3,467 depending on experience.
Requirements
In-depth knowledge of probability and statistics, LoRaWAN, simulation environments and Python.
