About
PhD project in power systems engineering at Reykjavík University on the ancillary services and grid upgrades needed to keep Iceland's isolated power system stable as large-scale wind generation is introduced alongside rapid electrification of the light- and heavy-duty vehicle fleet. The project characterises current and benchmark Nordic and EU ancillary-service frameworks, develops spatially and temporally resolved electric-vehicle charging load profiles, extends existing PyPSA-based models of the Icelandic grid to simulate future scenarios with wind variability and dynamic stability, and proposes an ancillary-services roadmap suited to the isolated grid, addressing ethical, practical and policy aspects with the system operators.
The work involves close collaboration with Landsnet, Landsvirkjun and international partners such as ICCT. The first year of the three-year position is funded by the SIF Doctoral Student Grant, with further funding to be applied for; salary follows Reykjavík University scales, with access to high-performance computing and established grid models. The supervisor is Hákon Valur Haraldsson, Department of Engineering.
Requirements
A master's degree in power systems engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems or a closely related field; solid programming skills (Python preferred; experience with PyPSA, MATPOWER or similar tools is a strong advantage); very good written and spoken English; ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team. Experience or strong interest in power system stability, renewable integration, energy system modelling or electric mobility is a plus. Applications include a CV, cover letter, a research plan of up to three pages, academic transcripts and diplomas, and contact details for two to three references.
