University of Wisconsin–Madison

About

The Loerch laboratory studies neuronal ribosomes and protein synthesis. The intern will organize structural datasets, build reproducible analysis software, compare structural features, and investigate ribosome states in cellular cryo-EM images using two-dimensional template matching. Machine learning may form part of the work. The appointment is up to 20 hours weekly for six months, with possible extension and pay based on experience. Send a CV and a brief account of computational experience and interests to loerch2@wisc.edu; software examples are welcome, and two or three reference letters should be sent directly.

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology or related field. Experience with scientific programming, data analysis and research software development is required. Applicants should be able to develop reproducible computational workflows and work with different data modalities (images, coordinate files etc), document their work and communicate effectively with researchers from different disciplines.
Experience with Python, biomedical imaging, structural data, or machine learning is preferred. Prior experience in ribosome or RNA biology, or cryo-EM is not required but applicants should demonstrate an interest in learning the biological and experimental context of the research.
