Abstract

Compact-binary merger catalogues can reveal how black holes and neutron stars form and populate the Universe. This seminar explains how population properties are inferred while accounting for detector selection effects. It reviews the demographic and formation-channel information described in GWTC-4.0 and considers how signatures of a binary's centre-of-mass motion might identify its environment.
