Chemogenetic activation of the locus coeruleus increases hippocampal noradrenaline levels leading to modulation of hippocampal excitability

Sielke Caestecker, Lars Emil Larsen, Paul Boon, Kristl Vonck, Robrecht Raedt · FENS Forum 2024

The brainstem locus coeruleus (LC) is the sole source of noradrenaline in the neocortex, hippocampus and cerebellum. Noradrenaline (NA) is a neuromodulator involved in the regulation of excitability of brain networks. In this study, we investigated whether chemogenetic activation of the LC is able to induce hippocampal noradrenaline release and affects hippocampal excitability.Male Sprague Dawley rats (n=8) were injected with the viral vector CAV2-PRSx8-hM3Dq in the LC for expression of hM3Dq, which allows chemogenetic LC activation upon systemic injection with deschloroclozapine (DCZ). Rats w

Schinus terebinthifolia leaf lectin (SteLL) attenuates immobility and anxiogenic behavior in mice through modulation of monoaminergic signaling

Michelle da Rosa, Leydianne Siqueira Patriota, Bárbara Ferreira, Amanda de Oliveira Marinho, Jainaldo Alves da Costa, Thiago Henrique Napoleao, Maira Pitta, Michelly Pereira, Moacyr Jesus Melo Rego, Patrícia Maria Guedes Paiva · FENS Forum 2024

Lectins are proteins that exhibit various biological and pharmacological potentials. These proteins contain at least one carbohydrate-binding domain in their structure, enabling specific and reversible binding to carbohydrates. Despite their known properties, there is limited knowledge about the effects of lectins on the Central Nervous System. Schinus terebinthifolia leaf lectin (SteLL) is a glycosylated protein extracted from S. terebinthifolia leaves with the ability to bind chitin. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effects of SteLL on mouse models of anxiety and depression-lik
