Neuronal diversity in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus of Mongolian gerbil

Sabina Nowakowska, Jana Henseler, Antoine Huet · FENS Forum 2024

The cochlear nucleus is the first processing unit of the ascending auditory pathway, where various neuron types integrate spike trains from convergent auditory nerve fibres (ANF). It is known that the neurons in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) differ morphologically and are categorised electrophysiologically, based on the shape of their peri-stimulus-time-histogram (PSTH) in response to acoustic stimulation with pure tones. Previous study on cats (Felis catus) reported that most AVCN neurons increase their firing probability and precision relative to the ANFs that innervate them. Thi

Projections from the ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body to all subdivisions of the rat cochlear nucleus

Mario Gómez Martínez, Héctor Rincón, Marcelo Gómez Álvarez, Ricardo Gómez Nieto, Enrique Saldaña · FENS Forum 2024

The ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (VNTB) is a major inhibitory hub in the descending auditory system. It receives descending projections from the auditory cortex, the inferior colliculus, and the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus. In turn, the VNTB innervates the contralateral lateral superior olive, the cochlear nuclei (CN) on both sides, and the outer hair cells within the cochlea. Its GABAergic, glycinergic and cholinergic neurons propagate the signals from higher centers to the first stages of the auditory brainstem. We injected the bidirectional tracer biotinylated dextran amine (BDA
