Distinct subcomponents in visual working memory

Gayathri Satheesh, A. J. Abdujabborov, Kartik K. Sreenivasan · FENS Forum 2024

Is working memory (WM) a unitary construct or is it composed of separable sub-processes with distinct neuroanatomical bases? In line with this latter view, (i) psychiatric and neurological patients often display subtle deficits in specific aspects of WM, and (ii) neurophysiological evidence indicates that WM engages a wide network of regions throughout the brain. To address this question, we designed a WM battery that required participants to maintain the colors and locations of multiple discs over a brief memory delay and report the location of the cued disc. By varying the number of discs to

Effects of sustained cognitive load on behavior and event-related potentials in perceptual decision-making

Fabio Taddeini, Giulia Avvenuti, Alberto Vergani, Jacopo Carpaneto, Francesca Setti, Damiana Bergamo, Linda Fiorini, Emiliano Ricciardi, Giulio Bernardi, Alberto Mazzoni · FENS Forum 2024

Perceptual decision-making involves interpreting external stimuli and selecting the most appropriate response. Success depends on cognitive control, which includes processes like attention, working-memory, and inhibitory control regulated by differential responses of fronto-parietal networks. However, the effects on behavior and neural activity of mental fatigue induced by sustained cognitive control are still unclear. Here we show that sustained cognitive load alters cortical dynamics, leading to faster, automatic responses and hence to an increased error rate. We acquired continuous hd-EEG d
