Topic: Chatbots

Lead the development and evaluation of generative-AI tools for perinatal mental health at the Parent-Infant Research Institute. The work combines language-model and chatbot development with assessment of safety, implementation and patient outcomes in digital interventions. It also involves research publications, grants and governance. The appointment is full-time for 12 months, with job sharing considered. Advertised annual salary is AUD 108,820–123,905 pro rata, with applicable allowances, superannuation and salary-packaging benefits.

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of social robots and chatbots that are designed so that users make an emotional attachment with them. This talk will start by presenting the first such chatbot, a program called Eliza designed by Joseph Weizenbaum in the mid 1960s. Then we will look at some recent robots and chatbots with Eliza-like interfaces and examine their benefits as well as various ethical issues raised by deploying such systems.
