The Chesapeake Bay Trust and its funding partners, including the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program Office, Anne Arundel, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, Baltimore City and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, request proposals for research that answers key restoration questions that are barriers to watershed restoration project implementation. The programme supports the Pooled Monitoring Initiative, which connects stormwater and stream restoration questi

Leveraging Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Approaches to Improve Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Forecasts

Haniel Cordero Nieves · NOAA Cooperative Science Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies II (CESSRST-II)

Distinguishing diatom and dinoflagellate blooms in Chesapeake Bay is difficult because its waters are optically complex and field observations rarely coincide with satellite measurements. This project combines historical phytoplankton observations, NOAA satellite bloom products, geospatial processing and ecological information in a reproducible workflow. Quality control addresses mixed pixels, land contamination, cloud, missing observations, saturation and inconsistent coordinates. Of 31,531 field-to-satellite records, 860 initially pass validation; neighbouring pixels offer further recoverabl
