In Biology and Immunology

This meeting examines how pollutants, infections and other environmental exposures interact with genetic susceptibility to cause chronic inflammatory disease. Immunologists and environmental scientists study how barrier-surface immunity decodes these influences. The programme combines early-life and population cohorts, single-cell methods, microbial and dietary environments, experimental exposures and mucosal defence to connect mechanisms with prevention and treatment. Programme participants include Martine Vrijheid (Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Spain); Petter Brodin (Imperial Colle

Adaptive and Maladaptive Myeloid Cell Production

Emmanuelle Passegué · Director of the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative and Professor Emeritus of Genetics and Development at Columbia University

Blood production can be rapidly reorganised after infection or marrow injury. This lecture follows the molecular, cellular and metabolic responses of stem and progenitor cells that accelerate myeloid-cell output. It then examines how persistent or misdirected activation of these emergency mechanisms can contribute to chronic inflammatory disease and cancer.
