Exploring the relationship between the LFP signal and Behavioral States

Condrado Bosman · Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group, University of Amsterdam

Wed, Mar 17, 2021 · 18:30 UTC

This talk will focus on different aspects of the Local Field Potential (LFP) signal. Classically, LFP fluctuations are related to changes in the functional state of the cortex. Yet, the mechanisms linking LFP changes with the state of the cortex are not well understood. The presentation will start with a brief explanation of the main oscillatory components of the LFP signal, how these different oscillatory components are generated at cortical microcircuits, and how their dynamics can be studied across multiple areas. Thereafter, a case study of a patient with akinetic mutism will be presented,

Background: The balance of excitation and inhibition (E-I) is a key functional property of cortical microcircuits [1] which changes through lifespan. Adolescence is considered a crucial period for the maturation of E-I balance [2,3]. This has been primarily observed in animal studies, and human in vivo evidence on adolescent maturation of the E-I balance at an individual level is limited. Here, we investigated an in vivo marker of regional E-I balance in human adolescents based on individualized biophysical network models. Methods: Regional E-I balance was estimated using large-scale simulati

A new framework for modeling innate capabilities in network with diverse types of spiking neurons: Probabilistic Skeleton

Christoph Stöckl, Dominik Lang, Alice Dauphin, Wolfgang Maass · Bernstein Conference 2024

Animals possess complex innate computational capabilities essential for their survival, such as recognizing poisonous food or walking right after birth. However, specifying the precise wiring diagram for neuronal circuits to achieve these behaviors is too complex to be compressed through the "genomic bottleneck" [3]. Experimental data on cortical microcircuits [1][2] suggest that the genetic code determines synaptic connection probabilities between neurons based on their genetic types and spatial distances. We propose that these connection probabilities, rather than individual synaptic weight
