Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a clinical technique employed in the treatment of multiple pathological conditions such as chronic pain, stroke, and among others. Nonetheless, a comprehensive exploration of the impact of electric fields on cortical circuits is still necessary. Studies by Frohlich and McCormick (2010) and D’Andola et al. (2018) have revealed the effect of direct current (DC) exogenous fields to modulate emergent activity patterns in cortical slices exhibiting spontaneous slow oscillations (SO).Considering the potential of tDCS as a treatment option for epileps

The different behavioral states inherent to the wake-sleep cycle are reflected in the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) and deep anesthesia are dominated by high amplitude slow-wave oscillations (SWO, < 1 Hz). With the increase in arousal, desynchronization and low-amplitude fast rhythms arise. While SWS and wakefulness dynamics have been comprehensively described, their transition remains relatively unexplored. Tort-Colet et al (2021) previously reported the emergence of an intermediate brain state, the microarousal brain state, characterized by the rhythmic

The ability to predict the onset of epileptic activity remains an important goal of preclinical neuroscience. Here, we investigate the transition from spontaneous Up/Down states, considered the default cortex network activity, to the hypersynchronous epileptiform state. We recorded local field potential (LFP) activity in acute cortical slices of wild-type and transgenic mouse models and used various seizure-induction protocols. The PSR method, a powerful tool in the field of nonlinear dynamical systems, has been used to gain insights of this dynamic complex phenomenon. It has been shown that s
