High-density electrophysiology probes have opened new possibilities for systems neuroscience in human and non-human animals, but probe motion poses a challenge for downstream analyses, particularly in human recordings. We improve on the state of the art for tracking this drift with four major contributions. First, we extend previous decentralized methods to use multiband information, leveraging the local field potential (LFP) and current source density (CSD) as well as spikes. Second, we show that the CSD-based approach enables subsecond drift tracking. Third, we introduce an efficient online

Traveling waves modulate neural excitability along the depth of macaque visual cortex

Lihao Yan, Mitchell Morton, Monika Jadi, Anirvan Nandy · COSYNE 2025

Traveling waves (TWs) in the brain are a form of neural synchrony. They have been observed across various regions, including the visual cortex and hippocampus, during both spontaneous and task-related activities. These waves are believed to play crucial roles in cognitive processes such as sensory perception and working memory. However, most identified TWs propagate along the cortical surface, leaving it unclear whether they also travel through the depth of the cortex. We address this gap by analyzing laminar TWs of macaque visual areas V1 and V4. We analyzed neural activities recorded from mu

How does frontal cortex impact exploratory decision making in Mongolian gerbils? Insights from a probabilistic foraging paradigm

Parthiban Saravanakumar, Vishal Kannan, Maike Vollmer, Frank W. Ohl, Max F.K. Happel · FENS Forum 2024

In the current world, it is essential to make valid decisions on adapting exploratory behavioral strategies to flexibly reallocate the resources. Previous studies involving exploration/exploitation dilemma have suggested that the anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC) plays a decisive role for the neuronal realization of exploratory resource allocation in human and non-human primates (Daw et al., 2006). In the present study, we investigated the performance of Mongolian gerbils in a probabilistic foraging paradigm (adapted from Lottem et al., 2018, Nat Comm.) while simultaneously recording local fil

Local field potential simulation across a V1 cortical model

Rares Andrei Dorcioman, Giulia Moreni, Cyriel Pennartz, Jorge F. Mejias · FENS Forum 2024

The local field potential (LFP) is an important brain signal to study due to its role in neural mechanisms such as visual perception and decision making, and in brain-computer interface development. Investigating LFPs often involves complex, biophysically detailed computational models, which face significant computational demands.Addressing this, we developed a simplified computational model of a cortical column representing the mouse V1 area, balancing morphological realism and practicality for large-network simulations. The model includes 17 sub-populations encompassing pyramidal neurons, PV
