Deformation

Upcoming first, then newest

The meeting treats subduction-zone hazards as connected components of the Earth system. Deformation, faulting, mineral reactions and fluid movement link trenches, volcanic arcs and the mantle, while earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis and eruptions can trigger one another. Researchers will integrate geology, geophysics, geochemistry and geodynamics across scales to understand cascading hazards, improve forecasting and relate deep processes to surface landscapes and climate-linked risks. Attendance applications are reviewed and capacity may fill before the application deadline.

Conference · Tectonics

The conference connects classical soft-matter questions about deformation, flow and assembly with sensing, learning, adaptation and control. Complex fluids, liquid crystals, phase separation and soft-solid mechanics are considered alongside active and living matter in cells, tissues and organisms. Sessions examine exchanges with machine learning and hard condensed matter, biological design principles, and applications to sustainability and health. Research talks, posters and discussion bring together physics, chemistry, engineering and the life sciences. Attendance applications are reviewed an

Mike Hudec on Salt Tectonics

Geology Bites · 2025

…He explains how deformation of these weak rocks produces distinctive structures and changes the evolution of surrounding formations. The discussion also considers the role of salt tectonics in creating hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Isolation of atomic mechanisms – the choreographer at play

Harry Bhadeshia · University of Cambridge

Harry Bhadeshia examines how atomic arrangements in metals change under deformation, magnetic or electric fields, heating, cooling and extreme events. These transformations can damage a material or create useful properties. Understanding the mechanism is therefore central to designing metallic materials. The lecture contrasts coordinated atomic motion, which can visibly alter shape and strengthen or toughen a metal, with disordered motion and mixtures of both behaviours when atoms differ in size. It explains how researchers isolate and study these processes and use that knowledge to design ma
