Brainwide hemodynamics predict neural rhythms and reveal their underlying networks

Leandro Jacob, Sydney Bailes, Stephanie Williams, Carsen Stringer, Laura Lewis · COSYNE 2025

The brain exhibits rich rhythmic activity generated by synchronous neural firing. These neural rhythms, which possess a variety of spatiotemporal patterns, are linked to cognition and vigilance. Neural rhythms are a defining feature of arousal states: in humans, alpha (8-12Hz) is a key marker of quiet wakefulness, and is associated with attentional processes, while delta (1-4Hz) is the most prominent rhythm during non-REM sleep, and is tied to memory consolidation and brain waste clearance. Prior work sought to localize the oscillatory generators of specific rhythms, but it is not clear what b

Oscillatory waveform shape and temporal spike correlations differ in the bat frontal and auditory cortices

Francisco Garcia-Rosales, Natalie Schaworonkow, Julio C. Hechavarria · FENS Forum 2024

Neural oscillations play a crucial role in various cognitive processes within the mammalian brain. Beyond the spectral properties typically reported in the literature, the waveform shape of oscillatory activity offers valuable insights into local physiology, and is related to the underlying cortical circuitry and to dynamically changing or aberrant cortical states. Notwithstanding the importance of oscillatory waveform shape to gain insights into cortical physiology, how the waveform shape of ongoing oscillations differs across distant yet functionally and anatomically connected cortical areas
