Glucocorticoid signalling affects astrocyte function via long non-coding RNAs

Tarannomsadat Taghavi, Ulrike Fuchs, Susanne Burkhardt, Anna-Lena Schuetz, Farahnaz Sananbenesi, Andre Fischer · FENS Forum 2024

Glucocorticoid signalling serves as a central regulator of the body's stress response and has been associated with several diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS), such as major depressive disorder or Alzheimer’s disease. While the cell type-specific effect of glucocorticoids in the CNS has been studied previously, our understanding of how glucocorticoids act on astrocytes and their impact on neuronal network plasticity is limited. It's important to note that only 1.5% of the genome encodes proteins, while the remaining 98.5% consists of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) implicated in vario

Polysomal profiling of spinal cells after peripheral nerve injury

Camilla Beccarini, Louis Scheurer, Roth Eva, Lennart Opitz, Hendrik Wildner, Hanns Ulrich Zeilhofer · FENS Forum 2024

Neuropathic pain is evoked by an injury to the somatosensory system at the peripheral or central nervous system level leading to direct changes in neuronal activity. Moreover, there is a large body of evidence that changes occurring in primary peripheral sensory neurons also alter secondary central circuits thus causing hyperalgesia and allodynia. The latter are hallmarks of neuropathic pain and recent work suggests that both of those sensory abnormalities depend on alterations in spinal dorsal horn circuits likely caused by a loss of local inhibition. However, the molecular mechanisms that le
