A Journey Through Modern Cosmology: From Massive Simulations to AI Scientists

Paco Villaescusa · Center for Computational Astrophysics, Flatiron Institute

Fri, Sep 25, 2026 · 19:00 UTC

Paco Villaescusa examines how simulations and artificial intelligence change the extraction of physical knowledge from precision cosmological surveys. The talk asks how much information lies in large-scale structure beyond power spectra, including nonlinear scales and higher-order statistics, and introduces the Quijote and Backlight simulation programmes. It then addresses the uncertain astrophysical processes that complicate small-scale inference through CAMELS, a framework combining cosmology, galaxy formation and machine learning. DREAMS is presented as a route to predicting dark-matter obs

Cellular mechanisms of conscious processing

Jaan Aru · University of Tartu

Thu, Nov 18, 2021 · 15:30 UTC

Recent breakthroughs in neurobiology indicate that time is ripe to understand the cellular-level mechanisms of conscious experience. Accordingly, we have recently proposed that conscious processing depends on the integration between top-down and bottom-up information streams and that there exists a specific cellular mechanism that gates this integration. I will first describe this cellular mechanism and demonstrate how it controls signal propagation within the thalamocortical system. Then I will show how this cellular-level mechanism provides a natural explanation for why conscious experience
