Relating synaptic connectivity to function based on a full contactome of a Drosophila motor circuit

Felix Waitzmann, Ingo Fritz, Feiyu Wang, Ricardo Chirif Molina, Andre Ferreira Castro, Julijana Gjorgjieva · COSYNE 2025

Connectomes provide critical constraints for neural circuit models. Advances in electron microscopy have dramatically increased the scale of connectome datasets, enabling more realistic modeling of neural circuits. However, challenges remain in using these datasets. Many models still rely on unconstrained physiological parameters, even within fully mapped circuits, leading to ongoing debates about the predictive power of connectomic data. Key questions remain on how synaptic connectivity relates to physiological properties and the anatomical detail needed to predict function. One modeling choi

Cell-specific simultaneous optogenetic stimulation and inhibition utilizing dual-color striped organic LEDs

Jens Weber, Giuseppe Ciccone, Ilenia Meloni, Hans Kleemann, Karl Leo, Caroline Murawski · FENS Forum 2024

Optogenetics is a powerful tool that allows controlling cellular activity with light by optically activating either excitatory or inhibitory synaptic ion channels. In this project, we study the effect of simultaneous optogenetic activation and inhibition in the same cells of transgenic Drosophila larvae using dual-color organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The OLEDs are patterned to sub-millimeter pixels with a high degree of light confinement, reaching optical power densities of 1 mW/mm−2, microsecond response speed and device heat‐up below 3 °C upon constant drive conditions at high bright
