Isolation of atomic mechanisms – the choreographer at play

Harry Bhadeshia · University of Cambridge

Fri, Mar 10, 2023 · 17:30 UTC

Harry Bhadeshia examines how atomic arrangements in metals change under deformation, magnetic or electric fields, heating, cooling and extreme events. These transformations can damage a material or create useful properties. Understanding the mechanism is therefore central to designing metallic materials. The lecture contrasts coordinated atomic motion, which can visibly alter shape and strengthen or toughen a metal, with disordered motion and mixtures of both behaviours when atoms differ in size. It explains how researchers isolate and study these processes and use that knowledge to design ma

A Model of Activation of Cortical Cell Populations through TMS

Aaron Miller, Thomas Knösche, Konstantin Weise · Bernstein Conference 2024

Modeling non-invasive brain stimulation, particularly transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex (M1), has been previously explored through simulation methods at different scales. However, the coupling of TMS induced electric fields to neural mass models is still largely unexplored, while previously approached as an arbitrary current pulse [1, 2]. Via multi-scale simulations at the subcellular and neural mass level we study the underlying mechanisms of electromagnetic activation of cortical tissue by TMS. Validation of the coupling model is aided by measurements like E
