Superior colliculus supports touch-guided corrections during licking in mice

Brendan Ito, Brian Kardon, Jesse Goldberg · COSYNE 2023

Successful actions require correcting for movement errors in real-time. When grasping an object, unexpected touches at the hand evoke rapid adjustments in grip. Touch-guided corrections require proprioceptive and mechanosensory feedback to be integrated with ongoing motor commands and transformed into an updated plan. To determine how touch events guide ongoing movements, we combined kilohertz frame-rate imaging and a deep neural network to track lingual kinematics in 3D as head-fixed mice retrieved water from a moving spout. We detected the offset of tongue-spout contact on the first lick (L1

Fear learning and extinction are crucial for survival and lead to disease, if impaired. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the cerebellum is bidirectionally controlling fear learning via the fastigial nucleus (FN) to ventrolateral periaqueductal grey (vlPAG) pathway in rodents (Frontera et al., 2020, Lawrenson et al., 2022). The mechanisms of the cerebellar influence on fear learning still need to be elucidated. Using a combined anterograde/retrograde viral tracing strategy, we targeted a dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN)/vlPAG pathway that projects on the FN. In extracellular recordings during a
