Lead research linking focused ultrasound, synthetic biology and cancer immunotherapy in Nate Yoon’s RPBS Lab. Projects include ultrasound-responsive gene circuits, immune-cell mechanotransduction and acoustic tools for imaging and therapy. Mentor students and develop an independent research trajectory in an interdisciplinary engineering environment. The expected start is 15 January 2027. Applications received by 1 October 2026 receive full consideration; the employer explicitly continues accepting applications until the position is filled.

Develop non-invasive neurotechnology based on focused ultrasound and targeted drug delivery. Projects may combine hardware and software, MRI-guided targeting, electrophysiology, closed-loop neuromodulation and preclinical experiments, with collaboration on clinical translation.
Dynamics of focally hyperconcentrated drug release for non-invasive cortical circuit manipulation
…drug release mechanisms using focused ultrasound (FUS) technology and ultrasound-sensitive drug carriers. Firstly, to achieve high concentration of drug release, we designed and manufactured ultrasound-sensitive drug carriers using microfluidic technology, allowing us to have control over size and con
Investigation of blood-brain barrier transporter dysfunction in sporadic Alzheimer's disease: Insights from patient iPSC-derived models
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent form of dementia, primarily affecting those aged 65 and older, known as late-onset or sporadic AD (sAD). It is characterized by the accumulation of βeta-amyloid protein aggregates and tau protein neurofibrillary tangles. Recent research highlights the crucial link between AD and dysfunction in the blood-brain barrier (BBB), primarily composed of brain endothelial cells (BECs), pericytes, and astrocytes, which regulate homeostasis in the brain. Transporter-mediated regulation at the BBB is pivotal, with dysregulation implicated in AD pathology. Non-invasi
Lateralization of motor responses following focused ultrasound neuromodulation of the motor cortex and thalamus in awake mice
Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a novel noninvasive modality for neuromodulation in the central nervous system with a high spatial resolution and the ability to target deep brain structures. Rodent studies have shown motor responses following FUS but mostly failed to demonstrate consistent and target-specific effects. Here, we used a high-frequency (4 MHz) transducer with a small focal area to investigate the target-specificity of FUS neuromodulation. Mice were implanted with a large cranial window consisting of an ultrasound-transparent Polymethylpentene membrane. For the experiment, awake mice w
Single administration of focused ultrasound-mediated blood-brain barrier opening is antidepressant with Claudin-5 remodeling
…Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a non-invasive, neuromodulatory strategy that transiently opens the BBB (FUS-BBBO) when coupled with microbubbles. Here, we examine FUS-BBBO as an independent therapy in a mouse model of stress-induced depression. Briefly, adult male
Sonogenetics: From the mechano-sensitive channel to brain stimulation for visual restoration
In the pursuit of restoring vision for patients having lost the eye-brain connection, ultrasound stimulation is a new interesting therapeutic approach at the cortical level. In particular, Sonogenetic therapy has been explored as a mean to increase the sensitivity of cells to ultrasound by expressing a mechanosensitive ion channel in the membranes of cells of interest in order to modulate their activity. In order to optimize sonogenetics for vision restoration, we first focused on exploring the properties of different mechano-sensitive ion channels, the key parameters being the spatial and temp
MBI Webinar on preclinical research into brain tumours and neurodegenerative disorders
WEBINAR 1 Breaking the barrier: Using focused ultrasound for the development of targeted therapies for brain tumours presented by Dr Ekaterina (Caty) Salimova, Monash Biomedical Imaging Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) - brain cancer - is aggressive and difficult to treat as systemic therapies are hindered by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Focused ultrasound (FUS) - a non-invasive technique that can induce targeted temporary disruption of the BBB – is a promising tool to improve GBM treatments. In this webinar, Dr Ekaterina Salimova will discuss the MRI-guided FUS modality at MBI and her research
