Intermittent fasting (IF), an alternating pattern of dietary restriction, reduces obesity-induced insulin resistance and inflammation. However, the crosstalk between adipose tissue and the hippocampus in diabetic encephalopathy is not fully understood. Here, we investigated the protective effects of IF against neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Histological analysis revealed that IF reduced crown-like structures and adipocyte apoptosis in the adipose tissue of HFD mice. In addition to circulating lipocalin-2 (LCN2) and galectin-3 (GAL3) levels, IF reduc

Galectin-3 is upregulated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and has been shown to promote amyloid beta (Aβ) oligomerisation and plaque formation. However, little is known about the effect of galectin-3 on neural cells. Our work aims to determine the effect of galecitn-3 on neurogenesis and on glial clearance of Aβ. Neurospheres generated from primary murine neural stem cells were treated with galectin-3 or the galectin-3 inhibitor TD139. Proliferation, as determined by neurosphere size after 5 days, was decreased in neurospheres treated with galectin-3. Differentiation, as quantified by proportion o

The autosomal recessive mutation Gly483Glu, occurring spontaneously in the murine protein Herc1, leads to its overexpression in the cerebellum of the tambaleante mouse (tbl). This causes dysregulation of autophagy-mediated death of Purkinje cells (PC) from two months of age, along with dysregulation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway responsible for proper axonal myelination. Both situations trigger the onset of an ataxic neuromuscular syndrome characterized by motor control impairments. In response to this disturbance, even before PC death occurs, microglia present in the cerebellum can
