Effects of non-invasive electrical stimulation on neural and behavioural changes following photothrombotic ischemic stroke

Montana Samantzis, Georgie Moore, Dylan Black, Phoebe Mayne, Matilde Balbi · FENS Forum 2024

Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability worldwide, however, current therapeutics are limited. Decreases in neuronal oscillatory power, particularly in the gamma frequency band, are commonly seen following ischemia. Previous research in mice has demonstrated that optogenetic stimulation in this gamma frequency range, specifically at 40Hz, is beneficial for recovery post-stroke. However, this treatment option is not easily translated to human patients. Here we investigated the effects of 40Hz non-invasive electrical brain stimulation as a potential therapeutic to restore motor impairment

Gamma frequency synchronization of nNOS interneurons provides long-lasting inhibition of dentate granule cells

Jose Carlos Gonzalez, P.A. Harshad, Jacques I Wadiche, Linda Overstreet-Wadiche · FENS Forum 2024

In the dentate gyrus (DG), granule cells (GCs) and local interneurons transform dense cortical neuron ensemble theta/gamma band activity into sparse DG output to generate contextual representations. GABAB receptor-mediated inhibition contributes to sparse DG activity, but it is unclear how it contributes to frequency-dependent synaptic integration and spike output. We recorded perforant-path excitatory postsynaptic potentials from GCs in ventral horizontal slices from adult male and female mice and found GABAB-receptor dependent inhibition of action potential firing during gamma frequency trai
