In Neuroscience

Spontaneous neural fluctuations and traveling waves are often observed in large scale population activity in diverse brain areas and in various brain states (Lubenov et al. 2009; Muller et al. 2016; Hamid et al. 2021). Spatiotemporal dynamics of neural activity, including traveling waves, likely implement diverse computations, including motor planning, decision making, and memory consolidation (Ermentrout & Kleinfeld 2001; Muller et al 2018). However, the detailed spatiotemporal patterns of wave propagation have not been well characterized in awake mammals. Critically, it is still largely

Deep cortical layers encode sustained changes in light conditions in freely moving mice

Adam Sugi, Damian J. Wallace, Alexandr Klioutchnikov, Jason N. D. Kerr · FENS Forum 2024

Many mammalian species, including mice, switch between lit and dark environments during normal exploratory, foraging, and predator evasion behaviors by moving in and out of dark spaces. How neuronal activity encodes visual features in the primary visual cortex (V1) in lit environments and under various luminance levels has been well-studied in many mammalian species. However, how the functionally distinct superficial and deep cortical layers of the V1 encode abrupt and sustained changes in light conditions in freely exploring animals remains unclear. To address this question, we recorded neuro

Influence of enhanced early sensory experience on functional cortical networks and behaviour

Shabana Khan, Dylan Myers-Joseph, Adil G Khan, Beatriz Rico · FENS Forum 2024

Can enhanced early sensory experience improve learning later in life? Using an enriched environment (EE) paradigm, we characterised the impact of enhanced sensory processing in early life during critical periods of cortical interneuron synaptic assembly, on changes in structural synaptic plasticity in vivo, functional cortical network activity and behaviour in adult mice. Using 2-photon longitudinal intravital microscopy, cranial window implantation and calcium imaging, we monitored the effects of early EE on functional cortical neuron population activity in mouse somatosensory (S1) cortex wit

ipRGCs modulate calcium response of AVP neurons in central clock

Chi Wen Liong, Shih-Kuo Chen · FENS Forum 2024

In mammals, circadian rhythms are controlled by the central clock, suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) in the hypothalamus. The external light signal could entrain SCN through intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a type of neuron in the retinal of mammalian eyes, by releasing glutamate. The innervation of ipRGCs to SCN has been revealed by using genetic tracing techniques and contributes to the synchronization of the circadian rhythm. SCN is a heterogenous structure that contains different neurons, while AVP and VIP neurons are critical for the networking of circadian rhythm.
