Inter- and Intra-hemispheric Sources of Vestibular Signals to V1

Guy Bouvier · Neuromatch 5

Wed, Sep 28, 2022

Sensations often trigger movements, but one’s movements also generate sensory experience. Vestibular organs monitor head movements and contribute to the brain’s ability to distinguish between self- and externally-generated sensory stimuli. Signals from the vestibular organs are broadcasted throughout the brain, including primary sensory regions such as the primary visual cortex (V1). However, what type of signals relative to head movements reach V1 and what the upstream sources of these signals are, remains poorly understood. Here we show that, in the absence of visual input, V1 neurons encode

Visual evidence accumulation in Drosophila melanogaster

Matteo Bruzzone, Giulio Maria Menti, Marco Dal Maschio, Aram Megighian · FENS Forum 2024

In a complex and mutable environment, animals continuously face scenarios where behavioral decisions determine their survival. These rely primarily on sensory input and the associated cognitive process is known as perceptual decision-making. The decision-making is typically preceded by the gathering of information across time in a process called evidence accumulation. This has been widely studied on various animals; however, in flies, the emphasis has primarily been centered on the subcellular integration mechanisms, overlooking the behavioral impacts and whole-brain neuronal dynamics. Here, we
