Blood-spinal cord barrier alterations in a mouse model of centrifugation-induced hypergravity

David Dubayle, Nicolas Rebergue, Yann Godfrin, Jean-Luc Morel, Sighild Lemarchant · FENS Forum 2024

Astronauts endure repetitive episodes of hypergravity (HG) during takeoff and landing of spaceflights, and also in space due to microgravity. We have recently shown subtle BBB breakdown in a mouse model of centrifugation-induced HG (Dubayle et al., 2023); here we have evaluated if the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) was also damaged in this model.Eight-week-old C57Bl/6J male mice were subjected to HG in a centrifuge at 2g for 24h, while control mice stayed in normogravity (N=9/group). Mice were sacrificed after centrifugation, and thoracic spinal cords collected for immunohistochemistry. For

Sex-related impairment of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus of hypergravity-exposed mice: New insights for space cognition

Mathilde Wullen, Valentine Bouet, Thomas Freret, Jean-Marie Billard · FENS Forum 2024

One of the challenges for space exploration is the exposition of astronauts to gravitational intensity changes that could affect crew performance through sensory systems and cognition deterioration. This preclinical study aimed at investigating functional synaptic changes in hippocampal neuronal networks to hypergravity (HG) that could manage cognitive impairments.Male and female mice were exposed to a 24h, 48h or 15 days exposure to 2G. Synaptic activity was then assessed by electrophysiological recordings in the hippocampal CA1 area from ex vivo slice preparations. In male mice, long-term pot
