…research misconduct, including image manipulation and fabricated publications, and the tools and post-publication review practices used by independent investigators.

In preclinical neuroscience, we are increasingly dependent on large-scale methods for evidence synthesis. With several million biomedical papers published every year, no one researcher can stay on top of the published literature. Instead we employ tools like systematic reviews to distill this information down. These methods rely on the published information being truthful, however. What happens when the evidence we collect is not? In a systematic review concerning the use of chronic unpredictable stress for modeling depression in rats, we screened 1,035 published papers for inconsistencies in

Target detection in the natural world

Animal sensory systems are optimally adapted to those features typically encountered in natural surrounds, thus allowing neurons that have a limited bandwidth to encode almost impossibly large input ranges. Importantly, natural scenes are not random, and peripheral visual systems have therefore evolved to reduce the predictable redundancy. The vertebrate visual cortex is also optimally tuned to the spatial statistics of natural scenes, but much less is known about how the insect brain responds to these. We are redressing this deficiency using several techniques. Olga Dyakova uses exquisite im
