Characterization of ASD-associated FoxP genes in neural circuit formation

Hanna Yeliseyeva, Martin Müller, Esther Stoeckli · FENS Forum 2024

FoxP genes have been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder that is associated with aberrant connectivity of neural circuits. There is evidence that mutations in FoxP genes lead to impaired cognition, speech, and motor abilities. The goal of our work is to elucidate and characterize distinct molecular mechanisms with which FoxP genes orchestrate neural circuit formation. As a first step, we characterized the temporal and spatial expression pattern of the FoxP transcription factors. To study their impact on neural circuit assembly, we are using the chicken embry

In ovo RNAi as an efficient tool to explore molecular mechanisms of neural circuit formation in the cerebellum of chicken embryos

Aikaterini (Katerina) Koutourlou, Martina Schaettin, Esther T. Stoeckli · FENS Forum 2024

The cerebellum, traditionally associated with motor control, is now implicated also in higher cognitive functions. Patients exhibiting impaired cognition display cerebellar abnormalities, reported in disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability (ID), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or schizophrenia. Purkinje cell migration deficits, volumetric changes and structural anomalies in the cerebellum have been observed in these conditions. This project aims to elucidate the connection between cerebellar circuit formation and neurodevelopmental disorders t
