In Cognition and Behavioral Ecology

Develop pretrained models of functional, diffusion and structural MRI that predict individual cognition with calibrated uncertainty. The ANR-funded MIND–GIN Bordeaux collaboration combines preprocessing and harmonization of large datasets, generative and self-supervised models, and transfer to smaller cognitive-neuroscience studies. The doctorate will release open pipelines and benchmarks. Python and PyTorch or JAX, probability, statistics and representation learning are required; neuroimaging and large-scale computing experience are desirable. Appointment: 3 years; advertised start 2027-01-01

The meeting studies animal movement from individual cognition and decision-making through social coordination, populations and evolutionary change. It examines responses to extreme conditions, the effects of movement on species interactions and disease, and connections with conservation, land use and infrastructure. New tracking technologies, multiple sensor streams, onboard processing, near-real-time observations and AI-based analyses will be discussed as ways to connect mechanisms with environmental change. Animals are considered both study subjects and indicators of changing habitats. Atten

Nest construction by weaver ants: Cognition without a brain

Ofer Feinerman · Weizmann Institute of Science

Weaver ants coordinate their bodies and surrounding leaves to construct enclosed nests. Laboratory experiments show that a local zipping rule predicts construction in simple settings, yet colonies also solve puzzles where that rule fails. The talk examines how coupled ant–leaf dynamics can support information processing beyond individual cognition, providing an experimental model for the capabilities and limits of collective problem solving.
