Detailed 3D architecture of adult human organs through new tissue clearing techniques

Héloïse Policet-Betend, Tomás Jordá-Siquier, Maeva Badré, Céline Brockmann, Jasmine Abdulcadir, Christophe Lamy · FENS Forum 2024

Traditional histology relies on thin sections of small samples for studying human tissues, which limits our understanding of the complex structure and anatomical relationships of whole organs. Gross anatomy and medical imaging on the other hand lack the resolution and specificity to visualize histological structures. Tissue clearing methods are emerging as innovative solutions to transcend this constraint by revealing the spatial architecture of large tissues samples. However, making adult human organs transparent remains a challenge, given their size, density and endogenous fluorescence. We h

Functional architecture of the clitoris

Maeva Badre, Christophe Lamy, Priscilla Soulié, Jasmine Abdulcadir, Marie-Luce Bochaton-Piallat, Céline Brockmann · FENS Forum 2024

Lack of knowledge about the functional anatomy of the clitoris still persists and negatively impacts medical care for girls, women and gender diverse individuals with a clitoris. It maintains harmful practices and beliefs, such as Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), which involve nerve damage. Precise knowledge of clitoral anatomy and histology is crucial in vulvar and vaginal surgeries for malignant and benign conditions, such as urinary incontinence or cysts, as well as in gender affirmation surgeries or reconstructive surgery after FGM/C. This interdisciplinary project aims at descri
