A gated receptivity model of widely broadcast signals for the transfer of graded information

Lindsey Brown, NaYoung So, Larry Abbott, Michael Shadlen, Mark Goldman · COSYNE 2025

Decision making often relies on accumulating evidence for different choices. Traditional decision-making models predict that neural activity will exhibit persistent ramping with evidence. By contrast, recent studies in rodents and primates have observed that the representation of accumulated evidence shifts between different neural populations as decision-making demands change within a trial. Prior models only accumulate and maintain evidence, but fail to explain the transfer of graded evidence between populations. This transfer supports the continuous representation of a decision when an anim

Detecting behaviorally relevant stimuli in a complex environment (such as a camouflaged predator) requires comparing sensory representations (what we are looking at) with memory/cognitive representations (what we are looking for). We test a hypothesis proposed by Freedman and Ibos in 2018 that, in such context, lateral intraparietal area (LIP) integrates and compares visual and working memory related information in order to transform them into decision related signals. We posit that sensory information are extracted within the hierarchy of visual cortical areas, and that prefrontal cortex (PFC
