PhenoSign - Molecular Dynamic Insights
Do You Know Your Blood Glucose Level? You Probably Should! A single measurement is not enough to truly understand your metabolic health. Blood glucose levels fluctuate dynamically, and meaningful insights require continuous monitoring over time. But glucose is just one example. Many other molecular concentrations in the body are not static. Their variations are influenced by individual physiology and overall health. PhenoSign, a Swiss MedTech startup, is on a mission to become the leader in real-time molecular analysis of complex fluids, supporting clinical decision-making and life sciences applications. By providing real-time, in-situ molecular insights, we aim to advance medicine and transform life sciences research. This talk will provide an overview of PhenoSign’s journey since its inception in 2022—our achievements, challenges, and the strategic roadmap we are executing to shape the future of real-time molecular diagnostics.
Environmental Impact of Research
Research, whether direct or indirect, aims to advance knowledge and change the world for the better. But whether you are spike-sorting with high-performance computers, getting through 100 single-use plastic pipette tips in a day or receiving regular shipments of metal-rich equipment, your research is having a long-term and detrimental impact on the environment. This session will explore how life sciences research contributes to the climate crisis and negatively impacts local and global environments. Practical advice will be given on ways to reduce the footprint of your own research.
Inclusive Basic Research
Methodology for understanding the basic phenomena of life can be done in vitro or in vivo, under tightly-controlled experimental conditions designed to limit variability. However stringent the protocol, these experiments do not occur in a cultural vacuum and they are often subject to the same societal biases as other research disciplines. Many researchers uphold the status quo of biased basic research by not questioning the characteristics of their experimental animals, or the people from whom their tissue samples were collected. This means that our fundamental understanding of life has been built on biased models. This session will explore the ways in which basic life sciences research can be biased and the implications of this. We will discuss practical ways to assess your research design and how to make sure it is representative.
Scientific Exchange Grants
EMBO supports short international research visits that establish new collaborations and transfer expertise between laboratories. Grants cover travel and subsistence for 7–90 days, with support determined by destination and duration. Applications are accepted throughout the year and must arrive at least 30 days before the visit; three months is recommended. Applicants need at least one year of graduate-level research experience and must meet the programme’s country and laboratory eligibility rules. Existing collaborations and visits to former laboratories or supervisors are excluded. Recipients must return to their home laboratory for at least six consecutive months. Courses, conferences, bench fees and overheads are not covered.
