Characterization of adult neurogenesis in Acomys cahirinus by lineage tracing analysis

Inês Araújo, Joana Nobre Rodrigues, David Brito, Clévio Nóbrega, Gustavo Tiscornia, Sónia Simão, Marta Vitorino · FENS Forum 2024

Adult neurogenesis, the process by which new neurons are generated in the adult brain, is a complex phenomenon with implications for brain development and plasticity throughout life. Adult mice and rats present neurogenic niches in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, which produce new granular neurons. Acomys cahirinusis a new mammalian regeneration model that features extraordinary regenerative abilities, including full section of injured spinal cord. Adult neurogenesis and how it potentially contributes to brain repair in A. cahirinus has not been addressed. Transgenic Cre recombinase-expr

The interaction of learning and evolution in innate olfactory behaviour of Mus musculus and Mus caroli

Paul Conway, Nishan Shettigar, Esteban Urrieta, Emily Dennis, Tomás Ryan · FENS Forum 2024

Adaptive behavior requires both innate and learned behaviours, but little is known about the interactions of the circuitry underlying these behaviours, or the implications of this on the evolution of behaviour. Using the olfactory response to trimethylamine (TMA) in the Mus clade as a cross-species model, we explored changes in the circuitry of innate behaviour through plasticity and evolution. TMA is a volatile odour produced during putrefaction and is aversive to most mammals. However, Mus musculus evolved to produce TMA as a social signal and are attracted to it. We demonstrate a concentrat
