Musculoskeletal skill learning with curriculum-based Static to Dynamic Stabilization

Nisheet Patel, Pablo Tano, Alberto Silvio Chiappa et al. · COSYNE 2023

Building realistic models for complex and skilful motor tasks such as dexterous object manipulation is hampered by two key challenges: the need for physiologically-detailed musculoskeletal models and powerful algorithms that are able to tackle such high-dimensional problems. The newly released MyoSuite ecosystem provides such musculoskeletal models and is 4000x faster than previous simulators, thereby enabling us to develop and test algorithms for agile object manipulation. Combining ideas from stochastic optimal control and reinforcement learning (RL), we develop a training curriculum called

…movements from the complex non-linear musculoskeletal system? This understanding can help us uncover how does the cortical activity relates to the movement. To elucidate this relationship, we build a model of the MC with realistic properties. To mimic the recurrent connections between cortical neurons, we use recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to model the MC. The MC model receives sensory feedback and delivers muscle excitations to anatomically accurate musculoskeletal models to produce experimentally observed movements. The se
